Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, Invisible Spaces shows how two vastly different forms of architecture, old and new, both embody the concept of hidden spaces, but in two completely different ways.
The older architecture creates nooks, courtyards, and implies an adjacent invisible structure, all commonly unnoticed from a pedestrian perspective. It is only from an aerial perspective, or taking the time to slowly pass by that the true nature of Chicago's original architecture is discovered.
The newer contemporary architecture, while standing tall in the cityscape skyline, is designed to blend in to and reflect the sky, nature, and its surroundings. This creates the illusion that it is not there and helps to minimize skyline overcrowding/pollution. Unlike the older architecture, these buildings are designed to simultaneously be noticed and disappear, and visible from all perspectives.
